If you’re an independent artist, releasing music can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to all the metadata and crediting needed for digital distribution and CD manufacturing.
You might be wondering:
Can I use a DDP file for both CDs and digital releases?
How do I add metadata like cover art, lyrics, and credits?
Is there a simple way to do all this without hiring a label?
The short answer is yes, and I’ve got you covered. Whether you’re mastering an album or uploading a single, this guide walks you through everything step by step (like you’re in 5th grade, but with Grammy-winning vibes).
First: What’s a DDP file?
A DDP (Disc Description Protocol) file is like a super-organized folder that tells a CD manufacturer everything about your album:
The audio tracks
The order of the songs
The gaps between songs
The artist name, album name, song titles (aka metadata)
It’s perfect for making physical CDs (and yes, some people still buy CDs as of the date of this publication), but…
Can I use a DDP file to add metadata to digital files (like MP3s)?
Not directly.
DDP is only used for CD replication; it does not help with digital files like MP3, WAV, or FLAC on streaming platforms.
So if you want to prepare your digital files with metadata (like for Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc.), you’ll need to do something different.

Step 2: Tag Your Digital Files with Metadata Using Kid3
After you’ve created official credits, you’ll want your digital files to look good when fans play them on Spotify, in their car, or on iTunes.
Goal: Add cover art and visible metadata to your MP3s/WAVs so they look good in iTunes, car stereos, etc.
What You Need:
- Download Kid3 (free)
- MP3 or WAV versions of your songs
- Your album cover image (JPG or PNG)
- Metadata info (title, artist, album, year, genre, etc.)
Steps:
- Open Kid3 and drag in all your files.
- Click on a song and fill in:
- Title
- Artist
- Album
- Track Number
- Genre
- Year
- Click to add cover art (find the image file and embed it).
- Repeat for each song, or use “Apply to All” if the info is the same.
- Hit File > Save All.
Now each file is tagged, clean, beautiful, and ready for streaming or radio!
Step 3: Upload to Your Distributor
Once your files are properly tagged, it’s time to upload them for release!
Goal: Make your release ready for streaming/download platforms.
What You Need:
- Your tagged MP3 or WAV files (from Kid3)
- Your Pro Credits Package (from SoundCredit)
- Album artwork
- Release info: title, release date, genres, lyrics, UPC, ISRCs, etc.
Most distributors (DistroKid, CD Baby, Tunecore) will walk you through the upload process, and some even allow you to add extended credits and lyrics. Others will share your credits with platforms like Tidal and Qobuz.
Bonus Step: Register for Royalties
To make sure you’re paid properly, don’t forget to register your songs with:
SoundExchange – for digital performance royalties
ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC (requires invitation), for public performance royalty collection
The MLC, for mechanical royalties
Use the same info from your metadata and credits template (or use one of ours below) to make sure your registrations match across platforms.
